India's bid to reach the Davis Cup Final 8 ended in Seoul on Saturday after South Korea won their Qualifiers second-round tie 3-1. India's doubles victory briefly revived hopes of a comeback, but Soonwoo Kwon defeated Sumit Nagal 6-1, 6-2 in the fourth rubber to seal the tie for the hosts.
India vs South Korea Davis Cup result
South Korea finished the Qualifiers second-round tie with a 3-1 victory over India at the Olympic Tennis Court in Seoul. The result sends Korea into the Davis Cup Final 8 for the first time, according to the official Davis Cup website, while India's 2026 campaign ends at the qualification stage.
India had entered Saturday trailing 0-2 after losing both opening singles matches. Dhakshineswar Suresh won the first set against Kwon on Friday before the Korean recovered to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Sumit Nagal also took the opening set against Hyeon Chung but lost 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Suresh and Balaji gave India a lifeline
India changed its doubles combination for the third rubber, pairing Dhakshineswar Suresh with N Sriram Balaji. The move worked. They defeated South Korea's Uisung Park and Jisung Nam 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and keeping the tie alive.
The win meant Nagal had to beat Kwon in the first reverse singles rubber to force a deciding fifth match. Instead, Kwon took control quickly and won in straight sets.
Soonwoo Kwon ends India's comeback attempt
Kwon beat Nagal 6-1, 6-2 in the decisive fourth rubber. The result gave South Korea an unassailable 3-1 lead, so the fifth scheduled singles match was no longer needed to determine the winner.
For India, the defeat is particularly significant because the team was attempting to reach the Final 8 under the current Davis Cup format. India had arrived in this round after impressive wins earlier in the campaign, including victories over Switzerland and the Netherlands.
Why the South Korea tie was difficult for India
Both opening singles matches showed how narrow the margin initially was. Suresh and Nagal each won their first sets on Friday, but South Korea recovered in both matches. That left India needing the rare feat of overturning a 0-2 Davis Cup deficit.
The doubles win demonstrated that India could still challenge the hosts, but Kwon's dominant performance against Nagal removed the possibility of taking the tie to a deciding rubber.
What happens next for India
India's Davis Cup run is over, but attention in Indian sport now shifts quickly to the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, which officially opened on September 19. Indian tennis players will also turn their attention toward the continental event.
For the Davis Cup, India will have to begin another qualification attempt in 2027. The Seoul defeat also leaves questions about India's singles depth, particularly after the team showed it could compete closely in individual sets but struggled to convert those advantages into complete matches.
