A new LPG subsidy rule takes effect across India on October 1, 2026. Domestic consumers who want subsidised refills at the regulated retail selling price will need to have completed Biometric Aadhaar Authentication, or BAA. If you have already authenticated your LPG connection, you do not need to repeat the process.
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry said, as reported by Akashvani News, that 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers had already completed authentication by September 19. That represents 89.9% coverage, leaving roughly one in ten active consumers who may still need to act before their next subsidised refill.
What changes for LPG consumers from October 1?
From October 1, completing BAA becomes a condition for booking domestic LPG at the regulated selling price with the applicable subsidy. Consumers who have already completed Aadhaar authentication can continue booking refills normally, with no fresh verification required.
If your connection has not yet been authenticated, subsidised refill booking will be enabled after you complete the process. The rule is therefore important for Indane, Bharatgas and HP Gas customers who receive or expect to receive the applicable domestic LPG subsidy.
How to complete LPG Aadhaar biometric authentication
The government has provided several ways to complete authentication. You can do it during cylinder delivery with the delivery person's OMC app, visit your LPG distributor's showroom, or use the official mobile app of your oil marketing company.
For self-service, Indane customers can use IndianOil ONE, Bharatgas customers can use HelloBPCL, and HP Gas customers can use HP PAY. Consumers should use only the official provider app or their authorised distributor rather than following verification links received from unknown senders.
Already completed e-KYC? You do not need to do it again
The biggest point for most households is that this is not a fresh authentication exercise for everyone. If your BAA is already complete, the ministry says no further action is required. Your refill process should continue as before.
That matters because 27.43 crore consumers are already authenticated. Before visiting a distributor, consumers who remember completing LPG e-KYC or biometric verification should first check their provider account or official app rather than assuming they must repeat it.
Will your LPG connection stop if you do not authenticate?
No. The government has specifically said the measure is not intended to deny LPG to genuine households. Consumers who are unwilling or unable to complete BAA can still receive LPG, but not with the subsidy attached to an authenticated domestic connection.
Such consumers need to register their choice through their oil company's digital channels, which can include the consumer portal, mobile app, WhatsApp chatbot or IVRS. They can then receive LPG at the applicable market price without subsidy in 5 kg or 10 kg cylinders, subject to local availability.
Why is the government making Aadhaar authentication mandatory?
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry says linking each subsidised connection to an Aadhaar-authenticated consumer is intended to reduce duplicate or ineligible connections and prevent subsidised domestic cylinders from being diverted for commercial or industrial use.
The change also comes while household costs remain a closely watched issue. Headline Thread has separately covered recent confusion around UPI charges and the government's intervention as onion prices approached ₹70, both of which show why changes affecting everyday household spending can quickly become high-interest searches.
How much support is built into domestic LPG prices?
The ministry's announcement, also reported by Business Standard, says the government continues to support domestic LPG pricing. The exact benefit experienced by a household can depend on the applicable subsidy framework and consumer category, so users should rely on the amount shown for their own connection rather than assuming a single universal cash subsidy figure.
What should you do before October 1?
If you have already completed BAA, nothing further is required. If you have not, complete authentication through your delivery person, authorised distributor or official OMC app before you next need a subsidised refill. If you choose not to authenticate, register that choice through your provider's official digital channel and be prepared to pay the applicable market price without subsidy.
The LPG services helpline is 1800 2333 555. With the October 1 rule now confirmed and less than two weeks away, checking authentication status early can avoid confusion when the next cylinder is booked.
