MediaTek has launched the Dimensity 9600 Pro, its latest flagship smartphone processor and the company's first premium mobile chip built using TSMC's advanced 2nm manufacturing technology. It arrives alongside the Dimensity 9600M, which uses a 3nm process.
The launch matters beyond a smaller process node. MediaTek is trying to strengthen its position in premium Android phones at a time when manufacturers are under pressure from rising component costs and consumers increasingly expect powerful AI features to run directly on their devices.
What MediaTek announced
The new family consists of the Dimensity 9600 Pro and Dimensity 9600M. Reuters reports that the Pro is manufactured using TSMC's 2nm technology, while the 9600M uses 3nm technology. The chips are aimed at the premium smartphone market, where MediaTek competes most directly with Qualcomm.
MediaTek has also put on-device artificial intelligence at the centre of the Pro chip. Its new neural processing unit is designed for generative AI workloads that can run locally instead of sending every request to cloud servers.
On-device AI gets a major performance boost
According to MediaTek figures reported by Reuters, the Dimensity 9600 Pro's NPU delivers a 51% performance improvement over the previous generation. That is particularly relevant as phone makers move more generative AI features onto the handset for lower latency, better privacy and reduced dependence on an internet connection.
The practical benefit will depend on how individual smartphone brands use the hardware. A faster NPU does not automatically make every AI feature 51% faster, because performance also depends on the model, memory, software optimisation and thermal limits of the phone.
Why the move to 2nm matters
Moving to a more advanced manufacturing process can allow a chip designer to fit more capability into a given area while improving the balance between performance and power consumption. For smartphones, efficiency is especially important because sustained performance, heat and battery life are tightly connected.
It also makes the Dimensity 9600 Pro an important competitive test for MediaTek. Premium Android buyers have historically associated top-tier performance with Qualcomm's Snapdragon flagships, while MediaTek has steadily expanded its presence at the high end through the Dimensity family.
Gaming, graphics and camera upgrades
Ahead of the launch, MediaTek highlighted AI-assisted GPU rendering, improvements to its gaming engine and enhanced ray tracing. It also teased high-end camera capabilities including 4K video at 120 frames per second. These features are platform capabilities, so the exact modes available to buyers will still depend on the cameras and software chosen by each phone manufacturer.
Which phones could use the Dimensity 9600 Pro?
MediaTek has not provided a complete India device list with the launch. Pre-launch reports have linked the chipset with upcoming premium Vivo and Oppo phones, but model-level availability should be treated as unconfirmed until the handset makers announce their products.
For Indian buyers, that distinction matters. A chipset announcement does not guarantee that every phone using it will launch in India, and pricing will depend on the complete device rather than the processor alone.
The bigger battle is premium Android
MediaTek's timing puts the Dimensity 9600 Pro into the next premium Android upgrade cycle as chipmakers compete on AI, efficiency, gaming and imaging rather than raw CPU speed alone. Reuters reports that MediaTek is also working with handset manufacturers to manage rising component costs, an increasingly important issue as AI demand pushes up prices across the electronics supply chain.
The real verdict will come when retail phones arrive. Battery endurance, sustained gaming performance, camera processing and the usefulness of local AI features will determine whether the 2nm transition produces a noticeable advantage for buyers rather than simply a stronger specification sheet.
What happens next
The next key announcements will come from smartphone brands confirming their Dimensity 9600-series devices, regional availability and prices. Until those phones are official, leaked model names, benchmark results and India launch timelines should not be treated as confirmed specifications.
