Sonos Play is now available to Indian buyers, giving the premium audio brand a new portable speaker option between the smaller Roam 2 and the larger Move 2. Sonos currently lists Play at ₹31,999 on its India store. That matters because pre-launch Indian reports had cited a higher ₹35,999 figure, so buyers should rely on the live official listing rather than the earlier announced price.
The headline features are up to 24 hours of battery life, IP67 water and dust protection, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, Automatic Trueplay tuning, Apple AirPlay 2 and a charging base in the box. It is a premium portable speaker rather than a budget Bluetooth model, and its strongest case is for people who want one speaker to work both inside a Sonos home system and away from Wi-Fi.
Sonos Play India price and availability
Sonos' official India product page currently lists Sonos Play at ₹31,999 in Black and White. The product became generally available in India on September 8, 2026. Earlier launch coverage quoted ₹35,999, but the live Sonos India listing is the stronger source for the price buyers can see now.
For context, Sonos' official portable-speaker comparison lists Roam 2 at ₹18,999 and Move 2 at ₹44,999 in India. That places Play almost exactly in the middle of the company's portable range, both in price and positioning.
What do you get for ₹31,999?
Sonos Play uses three Class-H digital amplifiers, two angled tweeters for stereo separation and a mid-woofer handling vocals and bass. A far-field microphone array supports voice control and Automatic Trueplay, while a physical microphone switch lets users disconnect the microphones when they do not want them active.
Automatic Trueplay is particularly relevant to the portable design. Sonos says the software continually tunes the speaker for its environment and the content being played, reducing the need to manually change EQ as the speaker moves between rooms or outdoors. Bass, treble and loudness can still be adjusted through the Sonos app.
24-hour battery and IP67 protection
Sonos rates Play for up to 24 hours of playback on a charge. The IP67 rating means the enclosure is designed to withstand dust and temporary water immersion under the conditions covered by that rating, making it more suitable for balconies, poolside use and trips than a conventional indoor smart speaker. Sonos also describes the speaker as drop resistant.
A charging base is included, although Sonos notes that the required USB-C Power Delivery adapter of 18W or greater is sold separately. That is worth factoring into the purchase if you do not already have a compatible adapter.
Wi-Fi at home, Bluetooth when you leave
Play's main advantage over a conventional Bluetooth speaker is how it fits into the wider Sonos ecosystem. At home it can connect over Wi-Fi, work with the Sonos app, support AirPlay 2 and join compatible speakers around the house. Bluetooth provides the simpler direct-phone connection expected from a portable speaker.
Sonos has also introduced Bluetooth grouping for its newer portable hardware. Away from home, multiple compatible Sonos Play or Move 2 speakers can be synchronised without relying on the household Wi-Fi network. That is a more specialised feature, but it can be useful for larger outdoor spaces or gatherings.
How Sonos 27 changes the bigger picture
The India availability arrives alongside the first rollout of Sonos 27, the company's updated audio software platform. Sonos is opening parts of the system to external AI assistants through Sonos 27mcp, with ChatGPT among the examples highlighted in launch coverage. The idea is that an authorised AI agent could control music on a Sonos system without forcing the user to leave the conversation they are already having.
That AI direction is interesting, but it should not be the main reason to buy Play today. Sonos 27mcp is beginning in Early Access, so the practical value will depend on how the software, supported agents and integrations develop. The speaker's established audio, portability and multi-room features are the more concrete buying considerations.
Who should buy Sonos Play?
Play makes the most sense for an existing Sonos user who wants a speaker that can remain part of a Wi-Fi multi-room setup at home but can also be carried outside. The 24-hour claimed battery life and IP67 protection strengthen that use case, while the charging base makes it easier to treat the speaker as a permanent home device between trips.
It may also appeal to buyers starting a Sonos system who value multi-room expansion. At ₹31,999, however, it is difficult to justify purely as a basic Bluetooth speaker. Buyers who only need portable music and do not plan to use Sonos' Wi-Fi ecosystem should compare less expensive Bluetooth speakers before paying the premium.
Sonos Play vs Roam 2 vs Move 2
Within Sonos' own range, Roam 2 is the lower-cost and more travel-focused option at ₹18,999, while Move 2 sits above Play at ₹44,999 and is positioned as the flagship portable speaker. Play occupies the middle ground: more ambitious than the ultra-portable Roam 2 without reaching Move 2 pricing.
That makes the buying decision fairly clear. Choose Roam 2 if size and lower cost matter most. Consider Move 2 if you want Sonos' flagship portable option and can spend substantially more. Play is the balanced choice for someone who wants a full-day battery claim, IP67 protection and a stronger home-and-away role without crossing ₹40,000.
Should you buy it?
Sonos Play is not trying to win on price. Its value comes from combining portability with the Sonos home ecosystem. For existing Sonos households, that combination is compelling because the same speaker can fill a room over Wi-Fi and then leave the house as a Bluetooth speaker. For everyone else, ₹31,999 is a premium that should be weighed against how much the multi-room and ecosystem features will actually be used.
The live official price also improves the proposition compared with the ₹35,999 figure reported before availability. Buyers should still check Sonos' India store for the current price before purchasing, since retailer and promotional pricing can change.
